Keane Wonder Mine

A little more touring yesterday. There is a lot to see here.

I went through Mustard canyon, named for the color of the soil and to the Keane Wonder Mine, which was a profitable gold mine operated until the early 1900's. Also, had to fill the bike up at the only gas station. 89 octane was a stunning $6.50.9/gallonšŸ¤‘

Large rivited steel tank, about 25 feet long
Poured concrete foundations

A lot of wood.

The mine is much more significant than it appears in the photos. It started as a vertical shaft mine. Things I wondered about:

1. They poured concrete in the middle of Death Valley

2. How far they had to transport the wood

3. How they lifted the ore out of the mine

I asked a ranger about how the ore was lifted and he could only offer a guess that they used mules. Possibly, which leads me to ask how they fed and watered the mules? Must have been some pretty ingenious men.
